Although I havent gotten up to date yet on Jazzies journey, I have so many thoughts and feelings racing through my head, threatening to completely send me spiraling out of control in an emotional explosion the likes of which have never before been experienced by sentient beings!!!!! So I believe a good venting may perhaps circumvent a tragedy of epic, and more than likely humourous (to my kids at least!), proportions!!!
So Jazz and I were paroled yesterday evening after another, fortunately brief, incarceration at Monash paediatrics!! As always, She was hyper, and it took quite some time in ED before the nurses and doctors saw that she was in fact desaturating and requiring more oxygen. Even when she's hypoxic, my Jazz is a whirlwind of energy!!! I think if we could somehow harness it, she could quite possibly power the town of Cranbourne in its entirety, single handedly!! No exaggeration!!!!
Whilst I'm so grateful that she's only been admitted twice this year both times for viral exacerbation of Asthma, first time for 2 nights, this time 1 night; instead of weeks at a time like last year, I'm finding as she's getting older and even more hyperactive its so much more difficult to deal with her being confined in a hospital room. Over night she was so insanely active ( more than usual thanks to prednisolone and ventolin burst therapy!!!!) that her nurse asked the doctor if we could sedate her!!
But even harder to deal with, is how my other kids are coping....or not coping as the case may be. Having a prem for your fourth child, and being a single mother.......its just crazy!! Throw in the fact that the two boys have additional needs and it becomes utterly mind boggling. I know this may sound offensive to some people, and believe me thats not my intention, but I really do envy those mums who's first child is the prem. I know there are heartaches and grief that they feel. Not having the perfect pregnancy, the "normal" full term baby, all the associated guilt that we all feel regardless of whether its first, second, third child etc. But needing to be there for your prem AND other children is a delicate juggling act, which I fear I'm failing at.
My eldest son has an anxiety disorder and my 10 year old has ADHD, borderline I.D and sensory processing disorder...my daughter is 8 going on 28, but still struggles emotionally. The past 2.5 years, for my eldest son in particular, have been horrendous and was initially made worse for him by his father describing in very graphic, sickening detail, late term abortions not long after the boys met Jasmine when she was a week or two old. He also, despite having no knowledge of the subject, told my sons that their sister was always going to have health problems and would be disabled....I wanted to smash that man!
The kids managed reasonably well while Jazz was in hospital, and were so excited when she came home, they absolutely adore her and spoil her rotten....theyre totally besotted!! Which makes it all the more difficult when she has hospital admissions.
My eldest son is going through puberty, which exacerbates his anxiety disorder and he has become very rude and disrespectful as well as having some anger management issues. Ive been told he is hyper vigilant, which means he's always on 'high alert', adrenal glands pumping adrenalin, almost continuously on the verge of 'fight or flight', and the tiniest thing tips him over. Unfortunately his response is not flight but rather fight and when he is running on adrenalin and his body and mind have been taken over by the primitive 'reptilian' brain, rather than the cerebral cortex which is used for executive functioning (reason, thought, rationale etc),he is impossible to reason with. Despite screaming for help from CAMHS and medical practitioners, naturopaths, dieticians, private psychologists etc, over the past 5 years, no help has been forthcoming for him and in september when he sees a new paediatrician....it'll be our last hope. He struggles at school, which is hard for me to deal with as he has an iq of 120, yet hes failing because he cant concentrate, cant sit still and flies off the handle often. He has been known to quite often run away from teachers who consequently find him hiding in corners or under tables in the classroom. It just makes me want to cry. So much potential that cant be utilised. On the up side, when hes not out of control he is an amazing, kind, loving boy who wants to help everyone....(well, except me with the housework!!!)
So each time Jazz is admitted, my son gets worse. Its gotten to the point that his relationship with my mother is ruined. Mum and Dad have been incredible, and are my only support, but they find it too difficult to deal with my son, and believe me, he IS hard work!!!. They struggle to see beyond the bad behaviour, to a boy who is having some severe difficulties dealing with everything. They are seeing an ill-mannered, rude, 'bad' boy......which of course he can be, just like any other child.
With each hospital admission, I feel so much stress, not just because my precious baby is sick again, but because I know my son and my mother will be fighting. My son has seemingly no respect for my Mum and is very rude, and mum is very tired and struggling herself, so the littlest things irritate her. Its so hard because Im helpless at the other end of a phone line knowing the remainder of my family is being torn apart and theres nothing I can do. I cant leave Jazz, aside from the fact that she becomes hysterical and desats to 50 if I'm not there, she needs to be constantly watched as she climbs out of the hospital cot!! And I have no one to 'tag team' with....its just me.
I'm fervently praying that as winter begins to draw to a close, hopefully we can avoid any more hospitalisations.
Now that Ive had my little sook and rant. Another thing that I feel is guilt. Nope, not guilt over my baby being born early, I had no control over that and reconciled myself with that early on. The guilt I feel is probably a bit odder and probably not entirely rational!!!
Jazz has severe chronic lung disease....but she's home and safe on home oxygen, yes she's been admitted to hospital a lot, often for 2-3 week stints....but we always know we'll be going home relatively soon; we can always see the light at the end of the tunnel. I get stressed, and I get sad and I find it difficult when she's hospitalised. And, like right now, I have a bit of a sook......and THATS where the feelings of guilt come in. Two months after Jazzie was born, we were joined in Bay 7, the isolette next to Jazzies, by the most incredible baby and her amazing mother. At the time it was just another very sick and amazing prem, but after meeting her mother Rebecca the next night, I found out that baby Taylor was the most miraculous little person I would ever meet. She was 'The pacemaker' baby. Beautiful Taylor was the amazing little soul who defied everything and was the smallest person to ever have a pacemaker. The pacemaker was bigger than her!! She broke boundaries and changed rules and pushed the medical team to the limits of their understanding and then beyond! Miraculous was a term that just didnt do justice for Taylor!!
Rebecca was from Wodonga and being so far away, she stayed at Ronald Macdonald house. Taylor endured many surgeries and mishaps and came through like the amazing fighter she was every time. Jazz and I were honoured to help celebrate Taylors first birthday in May 2010 and I honestly believed nothing could beat her! Also during May 2010, Bec gave birth to another amazing premmie, so now she had two incredible babies in NICU, fortunately Ella didnt have the same problems as Taylor. In september 2010, beautiful Taylor got too tired and after some illnesses, her poor little body couldnt cope any more and she passed away. I was shocked and devastated, I thought she would beat everything that was thrown at her! Ella is still in NICU, bay 5 and still on CPAP and she is 14 months old. Rebecca has been living at Ronnie Macs for 27 months with her incredibly resilient and wonderful son Dylan, and the light at the end of the tunnel is still not quite visible to them yet.
Rebecca is the most amazing person Ive met so far on my NICU/prem journey. Shes been a constaant 'fixture' in NICU and has endured heartache that I could barely even attempt to understand. She gets tired, misses her home and family, and sometimes gets sad, but shes resilient and strong and supportive and mostly a happy, wonderful, positive person. She really is an inspirational woman and I feel honoured and blessed to have met her.
So when I go off feeling sorry for myself and having a whinge, which I know is just normal, we all do it, I cant help but also feel guilty. Because whilst severe, jazzies chronic lung disease is only mild compared to Ellas severe chronic lung disease. And although Ive been in hospital a lot with Jazz, I get to go home with her and Bec is yet to experience that.
So over the past 2.5 years i've learned MANY things-
Like every other premmie mum - gratitude that my baby lived despite the odds being stacked against her, gratitude for my healthy (?) other children, for my amazing and supportive parents etc.
And so much gratitude that I always get to go home with my baby. Home is something that we too often take for granted.

The rest of June- a little bit of calm
9th June
Having a better day today, still on half a litre but her heart rate has stopped dropping so far during this mornings sleep.....terrible night last night though with the wretched bloody alarm going off all night!!!
Got almost no sleep!
Drank pretty well today too.
Jazz took one step unaided towards me tonight!!
10th June
Much better today, I've turned her o2 down to a quarter and shes satting high 90's in her sleep. Didnt alarm much overnight thank god! But low heart rate alarm went off a few times during her morning sleep.
I took the rubbish out this morning and when I came back in, Jazz was standing on a chair! Later in the afternoon she climbed into her toybox and had a lovely play.
o2 went back to half this afternoon. She wasnt dropping too low, just to low 90's, but I figured a bit of extra help was ok. Will see how she goes with trying to drop it again tomorrow.
11th June
Jazz is much better again, still on half a litre, will try to turn her down tomorrow. She's been dancing (wiggling from side to side) since she was in ICU (when she was feeling better of course) Storm was listening to music today and she was dancing for him, she's such a clever girl!
Low HR alarm didnt go off during this mornings sleep.
12th June
Doing great! o2 down to 1/4 overnight and she satted high 90's all night! Low HR alarm didnt go off at all.
She hasnt been having as many siezures as she was. I think its definately an indicator that she's coming down with something when she has up to 30 in a day. She has her sleep deprived EEG on the 16th, should be interesting, I hope we get some answers
15th June
Jazz is doing brilliantly of course, still on a quarter of a litre o2, but could manage on an eighth, but i'll keep her on a quarter a little bit longer to build her strength a bit more. Sally weighed her today, she put on 340g and is now 6.96kg!! Yay! Back to her March weight!!
Today she waved her hand and said 'bye bye', she's so clever!!

When will the rollercoaster end!!!??!!! RSV, Whooping cough and ICU
It has been extremely hectic lately!
Jazz put on 530g in the first month after starting polyjoule and the extra scoop of formula.
On the 21st May, Jazz spent the night with Paul while I stayed overnight on a chips camp with Kai and Paige. I had to wait until Jazz went to bed before I could leave though because every time I left the room Jazz freaked out! Paul was quite nervous because Jazz is still on the o2 and since the 17th of may has been having 30 of her little siezures a day, and they're just the ones I've seen!
The neurologist Michael Fahey wants to see more video, and she needs to have a sleep deprived EEG, he also wants me to keep a siezure diary.
Jazz did ok on the Saturday because I wasnt there when she woke up, but she was ultra clingy with Paul and wouldnt let him out of her sight until I got home.
As soon as she heard my voice she didnt want a bar of Paul and wouldnt even look at him!!
Throughout the next week, it seemed Jazz might be coming down with something and on Thursday the 27th May, I almost took her to Monash, but he was managing ok, I upped her ventolin as per her asthma plan and decided to see how she was on the Friday. She was having her RSV shot and seeing the infectious diseases doctor on the Friday.
We saw Dr Buttery on Friday at 9.30am, I told him I thought she was coming down with something as she had that whooping cough sound again. He checked her out and spoke to Dr armstrong, they said she was ok to have the shot and wasnt ED criteria yet.
We had to hang around at the hospital all day as she had an audiology appointment at 2pm (which she passed, but it did show some fluid or something in one ear) She had a long sleep before her audiology appointment. She refused any bottle and just wanted to go back to sleep.....very unlike her to sleep so much.
I decided to get her checked out after audiology. She had only had 160ml for the day and was pale and tired. When they checked her sats she was saturating at 87
She was admitted and put onto half a litre of oxygen.
On the saturday morning they did an NPA. She was tired, grizzly and not herself. o2 increased to 2.5l
Saturday night we got moved to a private room.
The sunday or Monday morning, Jazz started desatting, her o2 had gone up to 3 lt since friday, but was slowly coming down, she was on 2lt and she was dropping to the 80's, she was bumped up to 3lt , and the nurse left. Immediately I called her back because Jazz was still desatting. She bumped her up to 4lt and told me not to call again as she was going home, and to wait for the next nurse. Thomas wasnt far away thankfully and he gave a saline nebuliser in the hopes it would clear the mucous. Everything turned to shit so fast!! Within minutes she had 2 more nurses in with her, including Russell. Russell looked after her a bit up in Bay 5 as well, so he knew her quite well. They thought she had a mucous plug blocking her lung. A chest Xray was taken and ICU were called to assess her condition. Her oxygen via nasal prongs had increased to 10lt and she was having nebuliser after nebuliser with 8lt through the mask. Each time the nebuliser finished and was taken away and she was left with only 10lt, she desatted down to the 60's. Icu decided she needed to be there, so around 10.30am we went off to ICU on 18lt, it took 13-14 nebulisers to get her there.
She settled a bit once she got to ICU. She was put onto humidified oxygen with a mixer and initially was on 12lt at 100%. Slowly the o2 went down to 10lt at 60%. Npa and xray results came back. She had RSV, Whooping cough AGAIN, had aspirated a feed AND had a mucous plg!!! She came very close a few times to being put onto CPAP, only narrowly avoiding it when she again went up to 12 litres at 100%
I was shattered. It brought all the NICU memories rushing back in. I hadnt seen her look so sick since she was tiny in Bay 7. She was again having heel prick blood tests numerous times a day to monitor her sugars, phosphate and blood gasses, she had I.V's, nasogastric feeding and was so lethargic. Once again I was going through the rollercoaster of emotions, nurses had said she would likely end up on CPAP and could even need intubation and after living the NICU experience all the old worries about whether she'd make it came flooding back as well. I didnt want to leave her, and thankfully I didnt have to. They have special recliners that they bring in for a parent to sleep on, very uncomfortable, and I didnt get much sleep, but I certainly wouldnt be sleeping if I was at home!!
By Tuesday her oxygen was on 6 litres, I went on a break and when I returned she was once again back up to 12lt!!! They then realised that she was being lazy!! The machine that she was on, whilst not CPAP, does give a small amount of pressure and Jazz went back to her old ways.....dont need to breathe, machine will do it for me!! They finally twigged to it when they realised her breathing rate kept dropping. They decided to put her on the normal wall oxygen and lo and behold she started working again and o2 came down to 2lt at 100%!!!
Wednesday afternoon she made it back to the ward, thank goodness. Its hard staying in ICU, very scarey!
She still had a drip and the ng tube had been removed because the poor thing kept coughing it out. Wednesday evening the drip came out as it had tissued.
Thursday she was drinking a bit better. Shes been on 2-2.5lt oxygen awake and 3 lt asleep.
As I wrote this, it was Friday 4th June, shes drinking quite well, not eating though. Better within herself, but o2 is still 2-3lt. She was put back onto humidified o2 last night because the normal o2 dried her nose out and she started having nose bleeds. Her poor little nose was so sore looking!
When I saw Marc, he said the medical terinology for all that had happened was 'crap'!!!!
Jazz was 6.9kg when we got here, so far shes down to 6.6kg, but it could be a bit less as shes had 5 big vomits.
5 June 2010
Jazz is drinking a bit better, but hasnt been eating much. Her cough seems to be freshening a bit again....hope I'm wrong about that! Shes still on 2 lto2 and has been satting around 91-95
She might be turning a corner. Aside from the coughing fits and vomiting every time she has a coughing fit. Tonight she has dropped to 1-1 1/2lt o2 and has been satting low to mid 90's.
Shes also perkier!
6 June
Jazz managed to stay on 1.5lt all night! Little cow was up at 5.30am, oh god, I REALLY didnt want to get up!!
Sheplayed in her cot 'til 6.30am, drank 150ml formula!!!!! and went back to sleep, satting up to 96!
On the positive, Jazz is now on 1 litre and satting up to 96, on the downside, she had a very minor coughing fit followed by 5 big vomits.
David Armstrong saw her, he's very happy with her sats and said he'd really like to avoid the vomiting. There are 2 possible reasons for the vomiting, either she has a belly full of mucous or shes picked up gastro. He said its very common for bubs with RSV and whooping cough to vomit. If its gastro we'll know by this afternoon, but its unlikely because she's so active and perky and looks much better than yesterday!
12.40pm
Came back from my break to find the little bugger had dropped her sats to 86. We changed the sats probe and upped the o2 to no avail. Changed her sleeping position to a more upright one and she put herself on her tummy and her sats came back up to 95, but shes back on 1.5lt.
Jazz didnt sleep all afternoon. Mum brought the kids in to visit. Storm cried as soon as he saw her. By this time, 5pm, she was on 1.5litres o2 and satting nicely. She had a bottle and some custard, but vomited it up because I went to the toilet!! We are in a private room and I held the door open so she could just see me, but the minute I leave the room she becomes so hysterical that she vomits!!!
6.06pm
Jazz has drunk a bit more and is also coughing a bit more still. But o2 has dropped down to half a litre and she's satting low to mid 90's. Very unsettled though tonight. Shes tired, but as soon as you put her down ahe wakes. Refused strawberry mousse, had a nibble of a chicken chippee.
She finally fell asleep at 8.30pm. Bruna and Elvis came to see her around 9pm and the little ratbag woke up and wouldnt go back to sleep 'til 10.45pm!! She was just invincible!
7th June
So far so good oxygen wise. She's currently on a quarter of a litre. When the PSA came in this morning with the breakfast tray, Jazz woke just in time to see someone leaving the room and assumed it was me! She broke her little heart 'til I sat up in bed and said I'm still here!!!!
When she went to sleep this morning, she desatted and had to go back up to half a litre. When she woke, she was put back on half a litre and satting low 90's.
She staayed on a half and has been sent home with oximeter in tow. So excited to be home, but she wouldnt sleep!!When she finally did go to slepp at 11pm, she kept dropping her heart rate all night.
8th June
The Carelink nurse, Sally, came out to see Jazz. We tried Jazz on 1/4 of a litre, but she desatted when she was asleep, to mid to high 80's. So back up to half a litre. Sally weighed her, she's 6.6kg
She had a better day as far as bottles go- 500ml for the day!!! Thats her best effort for a very long time!
Forgot to mention that 3 weeks ago, Jazz started walking with her little block wagon. She walks the length of the loungeroom, then turns to see you clap and 'hooray', turns herself around and rides it back as though it was a scooter!!
She's been so happy to be home. Loves wandering around and playing with her toys. She can stand alone now for 30seconds!!!

April 2010- the ups and downs continue part 2
14/4
Jazz had a great night. When Marc came by he was astounded and said we could go home!!
He said she has incredible resilience!!
16/4
Jazz's cough sounds like its freshening again and its been a HUGE struggle to get the bottle into her!
She had speech therapy today and did brilliantly, the speech therapist said to keep doing what I've been doing, which is giving her little lumps from time to time and to increase the lumpiness a bit. With miniscule lumps she gags and with bigger lumps she actually vomits.
17/4
Still fighting the bottles. The kids and I went to the market, and for a picnic today, they had a ball!! Jazzies cough freshened up again late afternoon so we came home. They said it was the best day they'd had in a long time!
18/4
Jazz had coughing fits throughout the night, but not bad enough to go to Monash.
She took 90ml in a bottle this morning, thats promising
19/4
Jazz had her neurology appointment today Jazz does have mild C.P. The neurologist said it will either be diplegic (both legs) or left hemiplegic. The eye rolling siezures are related to the scarring on the brain that has caused the CP. He said she have a limp, or could even have no symptoms but we do need to keep an eye on things. According to Tiff the physio, we will know more by the end of the year. This year the myelin gets laid down over the nerve endings which is why things are showing up now. As the process goes on, it'll either get worse or stay the same. She wont lose the abilities she has though. The neurologist wants me to catch the eye roll clusters on video.
20/4
Saw the dietician today. She said Failure to thrive, I say insanely active child!!! Jazz is on the 10th centile of the premmie chartfor corrected age for length, but no where near the chart for weight.
Have to add an extra scoop of formula, and add polyjoule to her food and try a high energy diet for a while. We'll see her again in June.
26/4
Jazz looks like she's putting on weight.
Still having the coughing fits off and on but hasnt needed to go to hospital. We went to rachels birthday party on the 24th, Jazz was really good!!
On the 25th, Jazz had a few coughing fits that caused her to throw up everywhere!!

April 2010- and the ups and downs continue part 1
1/4
Jazz had a bad night, lots of coughing fits, desatting to 80.
This morning she had 2 massive coughing fits with desats to the 60's and increased o2.
David Armstrong said when shes on 1/4 of a litre of o2, no suctions and no desats she can come home. After 5 days on antibiotics, the pertussis bacteria is dead so she wont be contagious, but the damage is done and she could have a very nasty cough for up to 3 months. She could even end up back in hospital with it!
Easter Bunny came around this morning, he wasnt allowed in Jasmine's room, but Jazz got close to the glass, she loved him! He gave her a cadbury soft toy Easter bunny, she loved it too!!! She was also given a lovely quilt and knitted teddy that had been made by volunteers, its her third gorgeous quilt from Monash.
2/4
Jazz had a better night, a couple of coughing fits but o2 stayed the same and no desats. Saw David today and he said we can go home!!!! On o2 of course. Had to wait all day for the meds, didnt leave until 2.30pm!!
So glad to be home with the kids!!! Jazz was rapt to see them and they were so excited to see us!
3/4
The kids love having Jazzie home. Shes having a ball, cruising around everywhere. Shes still not drinking well, but not toooo bad.
The carelink nurse came to see how she was going, she said Jazz is doing very well and one of them will be back to see her again next week.
Jazz is still doing the eye rolling thing and also arching, but predominately the eye rolls.
4/4- Easter Sunday
Jazz had a lovely day at my brothers , loved her eggs, loved playing with all the kids....so glad we got to be home for Easter....didnt want to do Easter again in hospital!!
6/4
Saw the carelink nurse. She said Jazz really should be seeing a dietician as you can see every rib and bone and vertebrae in her body...she said Jazz looks like a ridge back!! The nurse spun out because shes 13 months old and only 6 kilos, but shes really 9 months old.
10/4
Jazz got sick again on the 7th, she had a roaring temperature, as it was late we gave her panadol and kept an eye on her. On the 8th I took her to the GP, her temp was 40 so I was told to take her to Monash. They said if she drank a bottle and stayed still long enough to check that her sats were ok we could go home......took a couple of hours!!!! Temp was gone on the 9th, but shes still a bit under the weather- hard to know if shes coughing from the whooping cough or something else.
She started waving hello and goodbye today.
11/4
Jazz has been having coughing fits progressively getting worse. This afternoon she was having her lunch (around 2pm, her times are off cos shes been off her bottles again since yesterday) she had a massive coughing fit and went very blue. I turned her o2 up a bit and patted her back lots, she started breathing again, she was coughing so much she just couldnt get a breath!! I thought she'd inhaled some food from coughing and choked
Shes been having a few coughing fits since then, turning red, no more blue episodes.
Watching her very carefully, I dont want to take her out in this cold weather to wait in a germy hospital if I dont have to!!
Jazz got progressively worse, no more blue spells but the nasty coughing fits and turning red every half hour.
I went to put her in the car to go to Monash and she had another nasty coughing fit. I got really scared, what if she had one of the blue ones while I was driving on my own in the dark and cold.......
So I called the ambulance. They checked her out and took us straight to Monash.
12/4
Jazz wasnt having a huge amount of coughing fits by the time we got to Monash, but finally had a really bad one in front of the doctor, they decided to admit her, its the whooping cough.
We finally got up to the ward at 5.30am....and I got woken at 7am
Jazz slept a lot today and Marc said she could possibly stay in for up to 12 days!!
13/4
Jazz had a much better night. When Marc saw her this morning he was amazed at the turn around and said she wouldnt be in for 12 days after all!! Shes incredible!

March 2010- 1st birthday and the rollercoaster begins again
1/3
Been very busy lately..
Jazz was in hospital again the weekend before last. Mild bronchiolitis again, only 1 night this time thank goodness!
She's been a bitch to feed, but is happy, active and well hydrated so no ones too concerned. She has a pattern of losing weight one week and gaining the next.
While we were in hospital they told me I needed to prepare for winter- everyone has to have the flu shot and vaccinations up to date. So, of course, the ex-husband is kicking up a stink and wont allow the boys to be vaccinated (despite the fact that they are old enough that there will be no extremely adverse reactions) he said he didnt care if Jasmine died of a preventable disease. He eventually agreed, but wants the doctors number so he can threaten her with litigation....wanker
Jazz started crawling yesterday!!! Real crawling!! Very jerky in her right leg.....quite odd to watch.
Her first tooth is almost through and really giving her hell, I think thats definately contributing to her naughty feeding behaviour!!
7/3
Jazzies first tooth is juuuuuuust through!! My god she struggled getting that!! And she's had really nasty nappy rash for the past 3 days from it!
Shes a bit unsettled today...wondering if her next tooth is on the move
She's a funny girl, she likes to crawl/climb over things and she can open the baby gate and come into the kitchen if its not latched properly.
23/3
What a shit time we've been having!!
On the 15th march- the night before her 1st birthday we got the call from Nick to say Jazz could come off oxygen all together!!! It was so exciting, what a great birthday present! She had a good night with no oxygen, but on the morning of her birthday she woke sounding like a little freight train.
The kids gave her her birthday pressies, then mum got them ready for school while Jazz and I headed to Monash.
We got to Monash at 10am and she was pretty much admitted straight away and put back on oxygen. As there were no beds available, we spent 24 hours in emergency, poor little poppet, what a crappy birthday. I bought her a hocolate muffin from Zoukis and sang happy birthday to her....but the muffin was stale... :(
While we were there she started doing this wierd thing with her eyes, they'd roll back in her head, it was really odd.
She kept doing it more and more frequently over the time weve been here, I kept telling the nurses but none had seen it so I think they kind of put it down to me being a paranoid mum, but eventually she had a proper but thankfully brief siezure in front of a nurse. Turns out the eye rolls are some sort of siezure.
She was put straight onto half a litre of oxygen (usually on an eighth) as soon as we got into emergency. Since Tuesday she's been on o2 and has gone up to 3 quarters of a litre and is currently on half a litre when asleep and a quarter when awake. Its Tuesday again now, 1 week later. Marc, the respiratory consultant is happy for her to go home if we can get an oximeter!! Fingers crossed!! Hopefully we'll see the neeurologist today and she is booked in for an eeg. She hit another milestone in hospital- she pulls herself up to stand!
And also got her second tooth!
The neurologist didnt show up and no one seemed to know anything about it!! Later they said she'd be coming for the eeg as an outpatient, so I cracked the shits and spoke to Nick. Neurology sent a lacky up, we got no joy, but Marc said she IS booked for the EEg even though everyone else says shes not.
As far as respiratory goes, jazz will still be here for another 3-4 days, she's improving, but slowly. Nick wants her on 4 hrly ventolin and shes on a steroid inhalent twice a day.
Had the EEG this afternoon, hopefully we'll get some answers!
25/3
Well, the EEG came back normal....which is great that its not epilepsy...but it still doesnt give us any answers!
Bac and Ava, and Cushla and the twins came in to visit today, it was great!!
Later on Shweeta came in with Jay, hes so big and very gorgeous!
Had a bloody stupid nurse just stand and watch Jazz desatting to 82!! I told him to check her sats probe while I checked the prongs and connections. He had to turn her up to a litre and still she desatted, in the end, she needed a suction, poor thing. Bloody stupid nurse, lucky I'm in here!!!
26/3
Jazz is having really nasty coughing, choking fits. Shes coughing up mucous which the sounds like its choking her, she had been getting better so I dont know if the cold has freshened or shes picked up something else.
Had to have all her mucous suctioned out again.
She had a big eye rolling episode in front of a njurse today.
Shes very, very hyper, especially when she has the ventolin!! and spent half the day moving. beeping and blowing raspberries, then got extremely tired and slept from 6-8, then had ventolin and bottle and went straight back to sleep. Unsettled and coughing all night though.
30/3
Yesterday we were told we were ok to go to the playroom for the 'smile day' festivities with NOVA and the clown doctors. Jazz got a hannah montana purse that she loved chewing on!
Had to race up to the servo last night while Jazz was asleep. Turns out the little bugger power napped and when I returned she was surrounded by nurses and absolutely hysterical! They hadnt been able to calm her at all and Russell said she had herself so hysterical that she desatted to 50!!! Mums girl!!
Today shes having lots of coughing and choking fits and has needed suctioning quite a few times in order to reathe!! Poor little thing goes bright crimson! A couple of times the o2 has had to go up to 1 litre, suction needed and an o2 mask wafted in front of her face as well!! The other kids are sick now. Kai has a temp of 39.1 and headaches and Paige is 39.3 with headaches.
Shes been 'cruising' around her cot a lot too and wont know herself when she gets home!!
At around 2pm they told me the NPA (nasal pharangeal aspirate, in laymans terms, snot swab) results were back and Jazz had contracted whooping cough since she was admitted.
When you're beginning to graduate through the bays on your way home from NICU, you are warned that the first winter especially will be rough, but you really dont understand ( or I didnt) that what they really mean is that just because you leave hospital, it doesnt mean the rollercoaster ride has ended. It takes some new twists and turns, and dips and dives...and sometimes climbs to amazing heights....but you dont get off the ride yet.....

February.......mild CP.....WTF??
7 months corrected!!
Jazz is being a bit naughty! Slowly starting to take her bottles better, but going off the solids over the past 2 days! I cant win! She lost 60g this time. It appears as though that delightful great feeding, weight gain honeymoon may be well and truly on the way out!
She had physio today, minor kick in the guts. She pushes back A LOT when you try to sit her up, I just thought she REALLY wanted to lie down, but according to Rochelle it could be a sign of mild CP. The same with the tippy toes when she stands, and this wierd shaking/vibrating thing she does sometimes....almost siezure-like. Why a kick in the guts you may be asking, its only mild. Yep, it is. The kick in the guts comes from believing there was nothing at all wrong, she was THE miracle baby!! (of course, she still is) but given how well she'd done, it was something I absolutely never expected!! One of the reasons it was unexpected was because I was under the impression that the CP came from brain bleeds and Jazz had none. I was told the ventilator, steroids and of course meningitis could cause developmental delays etc...but no one actually said CP when in fact those things of course can cause it, so I thought we were out of the CP woods!! And even though its mild, we wont know for a while just how that will affect her. It didnt get me down at all, just completely unexpected!!!!
She's doing everything else brilliantly, rolling onto her tummy and moving around all the time now so I think if it does turn out to definately be CP I dont think it'll be a handicap.
16/2
On the 12/2 Jazz started trying to get up on her hands and knees! On the 14th not only did she succeed but she started the rocking motion!!!!!
Last week she was weighed, shes being weighed weekly again due to her losses, and that week she actually gained 290g!!!! Way to go Jazz!!.......weighed again today and lost 85g, OMG!! We just cant figure her out!
Shes happy and active, probably too active, drinking her bottles a bit better (except for today!) but not eating much....cant win!
She starts early intervention tomorrow, at Biala, which is where Kai had his early intervention.

December and January 2009
Jazz saw the reespiratory specialist the monday that she was discharged from hospital, he's happy with her but she wont be coming off o2.
Saw the physio on the 2nd December, they had a fisher price piggy bank and she went off!!! Laughing big hearty guffaws!! It was hilarious and she had everyone in stitches.
Still unable to keep the prongs up her nose, she pulls the tapes off as well!!
3/1/2010
Its been a hectic few weeks, getting Christmas happening and everything. Jazz had another download on 29/12 and did much better! Only one desat at 3am due to moving. Still waiting to hear if it was good enough to get her off!
She only put on 40g last week, shes 5780g.
Eating solids pretty well, but since she got sick its a nightmare to get the bottle into her. Ive never had a baby so difficult to feed!!! But apart from that, Ive never had a happier baby!! And she never (or incredibly rarely) cries!!
She's getting a bit better at sitting up, but still cant do it on her own, thats ok shes only 6 months corrected.
Still cant keep the bloody cannula in her nose!!! She tears the tapes off, sticks the prongs in her mouth, sometimes dragging it and pulling her eyes down with it! Looks awful!!!
She couldnt see what all the fuss was about with Christmas, but did enjoy gnawing a turkey bone.
12/1
Still hectic!!
Finally got the call from Nick yesterday afternoon- Jazz did greatband only has o2 over night!!!! Woohoo!!!
She was sooooo happy to have that stinkin' cannula out, but putting it back in at night is a shocker!!
Its so good to see her beaautiful little face with no tapes!! Its amazing how different she looks!! I finally understand why no one recognises superman!
She's still not drinking well 60-90 ml, 4 x daily. But eating solids ok. She'll be weighed Thursday, that should be interesting.
2 nights ago Jazz said 'mum'!!
Found out yesterday that one of Jazzies little room mates passed away from liver failure, and her other little mate is very sick with her liver and most likely needs a transplant. This is the worst part about having a prem. You enter a whole new world where your little sheltered life completely comes unstuck! I had been so fortunate all these years to not really know anyone who lost a child, its just so heartbreaking to watch so many precious lives pass so young. I remember the names of every one of the bubs that passed while Jazz was there (and in the time since) and I dont think I'll forget them. Even when you dont really know them well, they have such a profound impact on your life.

Jazz only put on 180g in 2 weeks, but Nick said 90-100g a week is ok because prems dont put on weight as well as full termers.
Her bottle drinking has become an absolute nightmare! For almost a week now Ive been struggling to get her to drink at all!! She'll have her morning bottle ok....ish, 90ml.
Yesterday I found the best way to get it into her was to feed her when she was just asleep. Trying to give her liquidy solids to try and get the fluid into her. Its bloody hard work!!
Nick Freezer is still really happy with her, she can stay off o2 during the day. After her next appointment on 27/2 she'll have another download, and Nick thinks she'll probably come off night time o2 then also!!!!
Despite being naughty with her feeds, she's still doing great; happy, active- travels all over the place on her back!!
24/1
Still not drinking well. She'll still drink the morning bottle ok, but for the rest I have to get her to just asleep before she'll drink some! It has to be timed perfectly though, too asleep and she cant drink, not asleep enough and she yells and tries to suffocate herself in my armpit!!!
2 days ago she started saying bubububududududu
eating solids ok, seems to really enjoy her solids. But shes funny with them, they must be completely smooth, even the most minute 'lump' and she gags!!!
Saw the physio on the 2nd December, they had a fisher price piggy bank and she went off!!! Laughing big hearty guffaws!! It was hilarious and she had everyone in stitches.
Still unable to keep the prongs up her nose, she pulls the tapes off as well!!

2/11
Jazz had respiratory today and did really well. Nick wants her to have a download!
A nurse from carelink will probably contact me next week to come out and hook Jazz up to the oximeter. Nick said it may be that she gets to be off o2 during the day and just have it at night, that would be so good!!!
Shes still talking lots and managed a raspberry today! For a week and a half now shes been constantly pulling her prongs out and chewing on them!!
6/11
Jazz had her weigh today, she put on 300g in 11 days and is now 4780g!! Lee is really happy with her!
Carelink rang yesterday, Jazz will have her download o n Monday!
Lots of raspberries today!
9/11
Jazz has been really struggling with the heatwave we've been having. She doesnt sleep all day and is grumpy ( and blows raspberries in her anger!!) but thankfully still sleeping well overnight!
Having her dowwnload. It took ages to settle her! She was so excited to have the cannula out that she did a 20km run and flew half way round the world flapping her little wings in the cot!!
Mum held her and tried to get her to sleep, Jazz was still hooked up to the poor frazzled oximeter. Mum farted and Jazzies o2 immediately dropped from 94-84!!! and BPM went from 122 up to 140!!! I laughed so hard!! Bloody hilarious, I always knew Mums farts could make a great biological weapon!!
When I went to bed at 12.30am Jazzies o2 was 91.
22/11
Got the results of Jazzies download on Monday, she has to remain on o2 24/7 for growth and development, boo.
She satted between 85 and 95 all night, but to get off she needs to be 95-100. But for her gestation and the length of time she was ventilated, plus all the infections pre and post birth, I think shes doing brilliantly!!
She put on 200g this past week! Now 5040g!
She saw the Paed on the 20th, hes really happy with her progress, but I told him she doesnt like to put weight on her feet at all. He tried to get her to stand and noticed she goes up on tippy toes and tries to curl her toes under. he thinks she may be being sensory defensive. probably due to all those blood tests!!! Shes now 56cm long and is just nudging under the 3rd centile on the premmie chart for everything! He said shes in perfect proportion! At her first Paed visit, I forgot to write down that she had some plagiocephaly, which is when the head is out of shape. One side of her head was pushing forward with her ear all lopsided as well, so he told me to lie her on the other side to try to get her head shape fixed. And it worked, one perfect head!! Yay!
Other than that shes doing everything for corrected age and is still a VERY happy bubby!
She doesnt like the heat at all, we've had some very hot days and the concentrator pumps out so much heat the portable cooler cant cool the house!
Shes off her bottles a little, not drinking her whole 200ml (if only she'd do that now!!!) and looks like she may be starting to teethe. For a couple of weeks now she's been so dribbly and bites VERY hard on your finger! But shes too little to hold a teether!
Sleeping has been a bit off this week too. Totally on formula now. Im sad, but at least I expressed for almost 9 months, I was just getting too drained by the end there.
23/11
weighed today, only gained 80g this time. Lee is still happy with her, she siad it might be time to try her on some solids cos shes been unsettled, so this afternoon she sat in her bumbo ( and quite enjoyed it!) and had two tiny mouthfuls of rice cereal. She wasnt overly interested, but didnt seem to mind it, dont think shes totally ready yet but may give it another go tomorrow.
27/11
I noticed Jasmines breathing was hard and fast and she was working very hard. Her dinking was still off and for a few days her breathing had been a bit harder than usual. I checked her tummy and chest and the recession was huge!! She was sucking right through to her back! Took her to Monash and she was admitted for 3 days with mild bronchiolitis, no snots and not coughing much, but hard work of breathing and went off her bottles. But throughout the whole illness she was her usual happy self!

October 2009
3/10
Jazz had her respiratory appointment on the 2nd. Nick is still very impressed with her. She put on 700g in a month and her lungs are improving, she did brilliantly on 0.03 oxygen and only desatted to 89 after a while on air!!
Nick said if she keeps going like this she'll be off o2 before Christmas! If she does well next month, particularly if the weight gain is good again, she might have her download!
Paul got his first smile on the 2nd. She had physio on Thursday and did great of course, just needs more tummy time.
8/10
Still smiling lots and this week she's begun spinning on her floor mat. She also rolled onto her side for the first time yesterday!! Its funny how when she was in NICU all she wanted was to be on her tummy, now she cant stand it and gets so grumpy!!
Sleeping 7-12 hrs over night!
9/10
Jazz did her first roll today!!!!!! From her back to her tummy, then cracked the shits because she was stuck on her tummy and couldnt roll back!! lol
She's 13 weeks and 5 days corrected.
She squealies almost constantly on the floor now, chatting to her toys and anyone who's in earshot!
12/10
Jazz finally cracked the big 4 kilos! 9lb 20z!!
Went to Monash for morning tea, caught up with Sharon and Matt and Fu and Longlong, they are huge!!
16/10
Jazz rolls perfectly now from tummy to back and holds her head up off the floor!
19/10
Got weighed today, put on 160g!!! now 4320g!! The maternal and child health nurse, Lee, is amazed by her rolling!
Had cardio appointment at Casey today, unofficially, theres no PDA!! Yay!
While I was there I decided to go upstairs and show them what they nearly killed. Sally, the jin shin jyutsu nurse rushed over and hugged and kissed me and held Jazz, everyone was amazed and so happy about her! Muhummad, the obstetrician who wanted to abort her was astounded, he held her and kept asking loads of questions and was just amazed that there was nothing wrong with her. I hope he remembers that next time someones in my situation there. He said the night jazz was born (I had bumped into the midwife, Dawn, who told me I was cruel) Dawn came back to Casey and told everyone I'd miscarried rather than telling them Jazz had been born prematurely.......I was offended by that!!
26/10
Jazz put on more weight, now 4480g! Shes getting so big!
Lee is impressed with how well shes doing. Normal 4 month old stuff plus the rolling which is advanced!
Jazz constantly has her fingers in her mouth and dribbles almost constantly!
She had her 6 month vaccinations Friday and has been a bit unsettled since then, not sleeping much during the day and wants to be held constantly, but still sleeping 12 hrs over night.

up to 12 weeks corrected
8 weeks and 6 days
Jazz has been doing great this week. She put on 200g this time, most impressive! Lots of smiles and she talks to me lots. She had a couple of really unsettled days, wind pain, really bad, poor thing.
Shes having 150ml every 4 hrs now and sleeps 7-8 hrs over night! Very smiley and talkative first thing in the morning!
Saw respiratory on the 31st, Nick is really happy with her and still thinks she'll be off o2 by the end of the year!
Even though shes now 3240g (7lb 2oz), shes still in 4 0's!! And can still fit some 5 0's!
Still does the man farts, Paul heard the man fart this week and was astounded!! and amused!
10 weeks and 1 day corrected
Jazz has do ne briliantly this past fortnight. Last week she put on 260!!! Better than a full termer!
A couple of days ago she did her first real giggle, granted it was due to wind, but it was a real gigle nontheless!! Wind can be very humourous!!
Still in 4 0's but can now fit into some bonds 3 0's
Had her audiology appointment on the 11th and did brilliantly of course!
Shes smiling lots, particularly in the mornings and shes such a snuggle bum!! She'd love to be held all day if she could!
10 weeks and 6 days corrected
Still brilliant! Put on 120g thisweek!
Shes awake more now and plays on her mat with her toys, and smiles, squeals and gurgles.
The maternal and child health nurse said to start giving her an occasional bottle of formula to get her used to it for when my milk runs out. My milk is slowing down now, I've just been so hectic with everything there never seems enough time between her feeds, and running the house and looking after the other kids and appointments, to do a lot of expressing. Im managing to express twice a day and only getting about 25ml, bugger.
But Jazz has officially been breastfed longer than the other kids now, I've been expressing for 27 weeks!
12 weeks corrected!
What a shocker of a week!! Talk about hectic! Paul had a heart attack on monday.
Jazz was very unsettled and only had little 5 minute power naps each time we visited Paul in hospital, but even though she was unsettled she still managed to gain 140g!! Bringing her up to 3740g
Shes been having 1 formula bottle a day. My supply reduced so much that I nearly stopped expressing, but I just cant bring myself to stop. Shes been breastfed for 28 weeks now, but technically shes only 3 months old, if I can build up my supply and at least get her to 6 months corrected I will have reached my goal that I made when I first became pregnant with her!! Plus, I couldnt grow her properly inside me, the least I can do is see that she gets as much breast milk as she can!!
Despite the fact that my supply was always brilliant with the other kids, I havent had a lot of luck with breastfeeding. Storm fed 'til he was 3 months, then completely refused the breast, I have no idea why but I always wonder if it had anything to do with my arthritis coming out of remission. Perhaps it changed the quality or taste of the milk, or maybe it was due to my being in so much pain, perhaps he wasnt being held comfortably. Kai breastfed 1 hourly until he was 4 months. It was hard work, he was constantly screaming for the breast and neither of us got much sleep, but he was putting on weight like a champ until 4 months when he started losing weight despite the constant feeds. Again, I have no idea what hapened. And Paige just never figured out how to latch on. My nipples were a raw, bleeding mess and every time she'd cry for a feed I'd start crying because of the pain I knew was coming. Even nipple shields didnt help, when I tried them they just filled with blood, very grose. I kept telling the maternal and child health nurse, and of course the midwives when she was born, but they kept saying she was on correctly, I kept saying she wasnt. If a baby is on properly I wont get blood blisters and shredded nipples!!!! I expressed for a month, then gave up. So I really wanted to breastfeed properly this time........oh well.
Ive begun expressing 3 hrly again, but am only getting 5-10ml each time. Its hard when you're on your own and exhausted.

On the 18th August, Jazzie did one of this big open mouthed smiles thats c,lose to a laugh and she made bubbly, squeeky noises!!!
Since the she has been gooing etc a lot, she smiles all the time and chats to you! Its so beautiful!
Shes now on between 125 & 140ml every 4 hours and so far putting on around 120g a week, she now weighs 2960g.

She had her RSV immunisation at Monash this afternoon. We bumped into Zoe a d Archer, Fu and Longlong, and Shweeta and Jay, everyone is doing so well!!!
Jazz handle the vax ok, cried a little....was a big needle!!! But she got some lovely sucrose to suck on and cheered right up! Stopped upstairs and saw Bruna and Angel, and Bec and Taylor. Taylor and Angel are getting really big now!
Jazz gave me a massive smile today followed by squeelies and goos and gurgles, love it!!
6 weeks and 1 day corrected
Jazz has been doing great, growing big and gorgeous!!
She smiles lots at you and eats like a little piggy (ahhhh, if only that had lasted!!!!) Still very colicky though.
We went to ronald mac for the premmie parents morning tea. Bec and her mum loved Jazz! Ava is huge!! and so gorgeous! Bec and I met Fu and longlong at the cafe, Longlong's huge too, jazz loomked so tiny in comparison!
Jazz had her physio appointment on the 12th August. Rochelle is mighty impressed of course! Shes doing so well. Normally the micro prems have quite a few problems with holding their head, and arm muscles shortening from the way they lie in the isolette, but not Jazz!! She goes back in about 6 weeks and theyve referred her to an outside service just in case anything crops up in the next 9 months. The waiting list is about 9 months and if theyre not in the system and something crops up, by the time they wait theyve already missed an important opportunity to get in early enough to make a huge difference.
She saw her paediatrician on the 14th, hes impressed too!! He said shes a normal 6 weeks old, just small.
Smalls not the word, she hasnt hit any of the growth charts yet for weight and length!! Although shes almost at the 3rd centile for HC on the premmie chart. She now weighs 6lb 3oz, thats half an ounce heavier than Kai's birth weight at 38 weeks! She fits into some 5 0's still and a lot of the 4 0's are still massive on her!!
On the 13th she had her first big bath with Paige, then Kai and loved it!
She's eating 100ml 4-5hrly and sometimes having a booby snack in between! I'm still expressing and have a massive chest freezer, an upright freezer and 3 fridge freezers full of breast milk still!! So much for all my ealry concern about my lack of milk!!! But we are going through it quite quickly now!!

The first month home
5th August 2009
Corrected age- 1 month and 1 day
The day after Jazz came home she was featured in the Herald sun newspaper, the photos were great and even though I lived the story, it still made me weepy!! (For many months after that story we had people in the street recognise Jazz and I, and say how amazed they were by her!!!)
Its been very hectic since Jazz came home!! The hospital in the home (hith) nurses came every day in the first week to make sure she was doing ok.
The o2 has been pretty easy to get used to, although we have had some toddlers turn it up and down on her!!! The portable tank is simple enough, but it can be a pain to cart around, especially when its full and a bit heavy!!! But its not too much of a big deal. The concentrator is very noisy, but I've already acclimatised to it and rarely hear it now! And I dont need to use the heater because the concentrator puts out so much heat!!!! Its very expensive to run, but thankfully we get a life support concession from the power copany!!!
At her last weigh, she was 2580g.
The Tuesday after she camehome, she had her eye exam with Marcell in Cranbourne. She got the all clear, no ROP!!!! Shes incredible! Marcell thought she was amazing too! She has to go back in 6 months to check out the cataract again, but hes still sure its not going to be a problem.
Had the hith review on the Friday, the week after she came home. Arvind was so impressed by her, he said its great to see a little one do so well!! She was discharged from hith and has her one and only PAC (post acute care) visit tomorrow.
She had her respiratory appointment on the 3rd, she sees Professor Nick Freezer, hes really happy with her. He said be on o2 for 4-6 months. She has her next appointment and lab test (oximetry) in 4 weeks.
She was very unsettled the first week home, extremely colicky, poor thing was struggling to fart but laying on dads big belly helped with that! Shes been a little more settled the last few days, and wants to eat like a piggy!!! She has her required amount, then an hour or two later wants a booby (trying to see if I can get her on the breast) or bottle top up!! Shes huge now I think shes put on lots of weight! cant wait for her to be weighed tomorrow.
She smiles at us now, really real smiles that cannot be mistaken for wind!!!!
She astounded the hith nurse, I put her on her tummy on the floor and she almost rolls!! When shes on her back she hits and grabs her dangly toys, particularly her lion, she loves him!!
The kids have been wonderful with her, they absolutely adore her and, true to her word, Paige even helps change pooey nappies!!

Homecoming week!!!
Day 15
Another miserable day without seeing my precious Jazz. Bloody cold. I hope she doesnt think mummy's just up and left her! I just cant wait to hold her again! and kiss her and tell her I love her!! Its hard to think of her in there all on her own....I mean with no loving family with her.
Mum and Dad are going in tomorrow for me to get me some bottles and tell her I miss her.
Been calling of course, shes doing really well. She had her first bath and weigh without me today :(
Shes up 40g clever girl!
Day 16
I'm still snuffly but my throats not sore.....so full of mucous though its not funny!! And Paige is very crook with tonsillitis.
Mum and Dad got the bottles for me and brought me Jazzies dirty laundry. They also took a photo for me. Shes just so big and beautiful!! They told her I loved and missed her, she squirmed and wriggled in her sleep in response.
Hope I'm over this cold soon, I'm feeling really down not being able to see her.
Day 17
Still bloody crook, so its another rotten day without my precious girl!
Mum had to go in for me to take clean clothes and blankets, and deliver more milk. She got to have a cuddle and loved it, glad bubby knows she hasnt been abandoned!!
The plan now is for Jazz to come home Friday!! o2 will be delivered Thursday morning!
The reporter called for the phone interview. He told me her neonatologist Tony told him shes one of their best success stories because she's come through basically unscathed. According to the reporter, Tony said she was only given a 1 or 2% chance of survival!!! And only a 1 or 2 % chance of having no serious disabilities!! OMG!!
Glad they didnt tell me that!!! She REALLY is a miracle!!
She was weighed again and just maintained, better than a loss!
Day 18
I'm much better today, I reckon I'll be able to see her tomorrow!!!
Have to get the o2 installed first, they are coming in the morning. I'm getting so excited now!!! I never dreamed initially that she would come home so soon after her due date and be doing so well!!!
Cant wait to see my precious girland bring her home!
Shes doing great as usual, not much to report- she eats, sleeps and poos!!
I have missed her so much its not funny!!!
Day 19
I'm well!!!!!!!!
o2 was delivered late morning, exciting but a bit scarey too!!
Got in to my magnificent Jazz early afternoon.
Shes so big!!! Gave her a bottle and hugged and kissed her lots!!! I have missed her so much! Cant wait to have her home tomorrow!!
Shes going to have a bath and a weigh tomorrow morning before her feed. Dad and I will get there about 8.30am. She should be home around lunch time!!!! So exciting!
Day 20
Dad and I got in at 8.30am
She was weighed- 2456g (5lb 11 oz)
Had to wait 'til 2pm to take her homw, it was the longest day ever!!!!
We did our lap of honour around NBS saying goodbye to everyone and thanking them for the incredible job they did to get Jazz safely home.
Now I just hope Jazzies roomie Annabella gets home quicksmart!!!
Its incredible to finally have her home at last!! The kids were so excitied and couldnt leave her alone, I just cant put into words how amazing it is that we have her now all to ourselves!!!!

8 days corrected
Jazz is off her big monitor and on a small basic model. All chest and tummy leads are gone and only the foot sat probe remains!! Awesome!!
She had her infacol and pentavite straight out of the syringe this morning, she hated the pentavite and pretended to upchuck!!
Took her bottle really well of course, she loves the bottle! Had 1 tiny posit and big farts and burps, very unladylike!!
Its so great to be able to say its actually quite boring now!! I come in and feed her, burp her, put her to bed, drink copious amounts of coffee; feed her again at 12, burp, settle, coffee, home!! Its wonderful and has been such a long time coming!!!
Whenever I call at night now, I just get told, she's sleeping and took her bottle well.......just like a regular baby!
Cant wait to get the o2 installed at home, hopefully they'll get onto it quickly during the week!
It'll be incredible to have her home!!

For the first time since she was born I couldnt go near her :(
I have a snotty nose and raspy throat. Its been a very miserable and extremely long day, I miss her so much!!! Rang lots of course, but thats not the same.
Up til now I havent missed seeing her at all.......I feel sad, sorry for myself and also guilty that she's alone...even though she's surrounded by other bubs and nurses...she doesnt have mummy. And mummy doesnt have her beautiful cuddles
I need to take milk in tomorrow, but not sure if I'll be able to see her.

40 weeks- officially a newborn!!!
Jasmines due date today and I'm just so excited!
She was weighed, after a feed though, we subtracted 30g, but maybe couldve taken more, will know for sure tomorrow. I just wanted her term stats!!
She's 2123g (4lb 6oz) H.C 32cm and length 42cm. She's so big now!!!
Theyre still very happy with her and still want to send her to Dandenong.....and I still dont want to go!! We know Monash and Monash knows all Jazzies quirks...theyve even begun getting used to her girth!! (which always freaks out the nurses who're new to Jazz!!!) The thought of going to a strange hospital is really, honestly frightening!
I did 'term' hand and footprints today, a bit dodgy though 'cos she was not being at all cooperative!!, i'll redo them in a couple of days.
I bought her a big teddy bear chair from Zouki's today....she had to get her due date pressie!!!
1 day old corrected!!!
Wow, no more of the gestational age plus business, we're now into actual days corrected!! wow!!
Its a bit hard to get used to this corrected age business at first!!! She's 4 months old, but 1 day old corrected....strange!
She is, as always, magnificent today!! She actually had a great feed at 8am, got 3 let downs and had lots of wind!!
Had a bath and a proper weigh, her real weight is 2110g!!
She's doing so well with her feeds that her nurse today said it could only be a matter of weeks before she comes home!! I hope so!! I miss her so much when I leave! Its much harder now that she's well and its really only feeds keeping her in!!
She'll be shipped off to Dandy as soon as a bed is available....I told them how much I dont want to go.....hope a bed doesnt come up 'til we're outta here!!!!
Its going to be so scarey to leave!

Wasnt really happy with her nurse today, she hadnt been in the country long and she found it difficult to understand things! She wouldnt listen or understand when I told her Jazz had a big feed and was colicky, thankfully I ended up settling her by putting her on her belly. Shamilly also did all the meds when Im supposed to do it and that annoyed me too. I've noticed the Indian nurses dont seem to understand that when we mums/dads are in, its OUR job to change, bathe etc, for goodness sake Ive been doing her bum since she didnt even have a bum so its quite annoying to be brushed aside and have these other people take over when I'm in (happened in Bay 3 a lot also)
Jazz sucked well on 4pm and 8pm bottles, she's just brilliant!
3 days corrected
Jazz was much less colicky today. She has infacol with each feed now, so she now has her booby and passes out instead of being unsettled and upset for hours. Its interesting to re read this and see how she went from loving booby and passing out instantly to being colicky and upset so quickly, wonder what changed it?.......
She spent most of the morning farting -big, manly farts I might add, nothing petite or princessy about these farts!!!
Still waiting to move to Dandy (well, they are, I'm not!!!) Tony wanted the respiratory team to know about Jazz before she goes and they said they want a download tonight. they also want her to have a go at 15 minutes with no oxygen!!!!
She had her 15 minutes off o2 and utterly shit it in!!!!!!!!!!
No desats!! They were so happy with that they said they wanted to see if she could cope with an hour!!
She had her eye exam around 2pm. The ROP in her left eye is improving, she needs another exam in 3 weeks, if she's home we'll see Marcell in Cranbourne.
She had both breastfeeds today and settled well after each! No top ups!
Weigh- she only put on 1g!!! What a letdown! The nurse said maybe its because she's been so unsettled and not sleeping well and burning off too many calories.
8.30pm- Started her download, and she had her hour off o2 earlier.....and shit that in too!!!! Only 1 small desat and that was when she was squirming!
She also has staph in her eye and is having eye cream. I asked where staph comes from and was told it lives in the nose....since Jazz cant get anywhere near her nose due to the massive size of those prongs in her nose, and the fact that NICU turned me into a germophobic, obsessive-compulsive hand washer; and since I noticed something wrong with her eye and brought it to the doctors attention in Bay 3, I can only assume it was that bloody coughing, snotty Bay 3 nurse!!! Snotting all over my baby...grrrr
4 days corrected
Jazz was fussing at the boob again today, very unsettled, doesnt know what she wants!! Once again Im wondering if whether I should just put her on the bottle....so confusing!!!
Its difficult to know what to do at the best of times, but when you've been through all this......one of the things I was really looking forward to all the time she has been in NICU and special care was to be able to breastfeed her. When she started off and was doing so well I was so happy...now....dont know. At the end of the day, I know the whole breastfeeding thing is really again about me. It really doesnt matter for her because whether its bottle or breast, she still gets breast milk so she's still getting the best thing for her regardless of the packaging!......but I was really wanting to breastfeed.......we shall see...
In every other area, she's doing magnificently!! The download report came back (but its yet to be assessed by respiratory) it says she desatted 1 hour out of 12, that sounds pretty good to me! It also said she spends 45% of her time moving!! Just need to wait for the official results.
Sandy hadher this afternoon, she was annoyed that they keep topping Jazz up nasogastrically. When I called that night, she said she believes the reason Jazz fusses at the breast is because she LOVES the bottle, she just chugs it down like a little piggy!! I guess thats it then! If Jazz wants bottle, she'll get bottle!
Sandy also removed the NG tube!! Yay!! All suck feeds!! NEARLY HOME!!!!!!!
5 days corrected
Jazz started her first day on all bottle feeds, she does really well on them. After talking with her nurse we came to a conclusion. Jazz had begun a pattern on the breast of 'suck, suck, wait...then some quick sucks and waiting...then a couple more suck, wait.....ahhhhh, letdown...swallow, swallow, gulp, gulp.....fuss and tanty cos the let down stopped...' so basically the lazy little bugger just doesnt want to put the effort in to sucking and was getting plenty of fore milk with the let downs, but none of the good, satisfying hind milk....the bottle is easy, you dont need to suck much!!
She's off caffiene again now, hopefully she'll do well off it this time, then we just need diuretics reduced and to gain a bit more weight and she can come home!!!!!
The only other thing that needs doing is that Paul and I need to learn resuscitation before she gets the ok to come home...oh, and oxygen needs to be delivered, installed and need to learn what to do with the machine and thats it!! So I told them ok, we're good to go now!! I want out!
She had her weigh today, up 49g to 2160g.
So close now, Ive started getting the house in some semblance of order in preparation for Jazzie coming home!

Jazz is a little champ!!
Loving her bottles and even hasher meds in them, although today she had her hydro and spiro (sounds like a playstation game!!) and infacol straight from the syringe.....and didnt seem to mind it!!!
She has little posits after eachof her bottles though.
Etta said they are organising everything for us to go home!!! Needs to come off the fortifier, and have her diuretics down to once a day!
The speed with which she's been improving over the past few weeks has been absolutely phenomenal to me!!! If you'd told me it was going to be like this, while she was on that bloody HFO monster, I wouldve thought you were totally insane!!!!
Its something I never expected and I'm loving it, cant wait to get her home, and its becoming especially hard now that she's so very close!!!!! It'll be better than Christmas!
She was weighed, after a feed though, we subtracted 30g, but maybe couldve taken more, will know for sure tomorrow. I just wanted her term stats!!

39 weeks- ever closer to the exit!!!
Jazz is officially NOT a morning person! She just cant be bothered waking for a breastfeed at 8am- too much like hard work!
Before her 11am feed, we weighed and bathed her she's 1998g, little bugger!! I'm sure she knew I was waiting for the big 2 kilos!! and she poo'd off 2g!
After her bath she was ravenous and spent 20 minutes sucking, she wouldve gotten a lot of milk!! By the 2pm feed she was still full and sleepy so she had a nasogastric feed.
The doctors have upped her allowed feeds to 5 a day- 3 breast feeds and 2 bottles overnight!
Saw Leah in the hallway, she was amazed to see Jazz in bay 3, she said she's incredible....just need all suck feeds to get home.
On 0.06 all day, anelle said thats awesome, 'just a sniff'
8pm- O2 was reduced to 0.04!! That must be half a sniff!

Jazz was too tired again for the 8am feed, but she had her two bottles over night.
She's doing well on 0.04 still, although her prongs just will not stay in her nose!! The tape wont stick to one side because of the way the NG tube is taped. So she had quite a lot of desats because of that!
Blood gasses were done, Co2 is 57 so they want to repeat it tomorrow and her haemoglobin is low again too- 74.
She's been farting almost constantly, sounds like a truck driver!!!
Had a good breast feed at 11am- filled herself up. Then at 2pm she had a massive feed. Once again I was overdue to express and she got a lot all at once and promptly threw the lot up again!! Then she turned her head and gave me a look like she was saying "what the hell are you doing to me!!!?!!"
I fed her slowly after that, booby in- gulp a lot, booby out- have a break. She had a big feed and got very drunk!
She's very cuddly and delicious when she's milk drunk!

Jasmine is still doing brilliantly, but I wasnt too thrilled with her nurse! She was snorting and coughing and sniffling all over the place!!
Jazz is a bit fussy at the breast at the moment. Dont know what to do. I think maybe my milk flow is too much for her?? She's now on 4hrly feeds.
Weighed her today, shes now 2002g, only 4g in 2 days, maybe shes not getting enough from me.
Paul and I went in late tonight and he got to give her a bottle feed.
39+3
Fussy at the breast again today. Not sure if I should keep trying or if she'll do better on the bottle. She'll be getting breast milk either way.
She got moved to Bay 2!!! OMG!!! She's just amazing! I can literally almost see the door from here!!!
39+4
Had a better feed today, we tried a nipple shield and she does much better on it.
Everyone is still astounded at how well she's doing! nd we have the family meeting tomorrow!!!!
Oxygen 0.06 and she had a nice, big poo!
Had a bath and a weigh, put on 41g this time, much better!!! Now 2046g And now she smells nice too!
39+5
Jazz had to be topped up for this mornings feed, just not a morning person.
The family meeting was good. Tony thinks Jazz is brilliant! Of course she is!!!
He said all she needs is to have all suck feeds, and we will go home on oxygen, thats ok, thats what I always assumed anyway.
He said we will be moved to Dadenong very soon for fattening up and establishing feeds....dont want to go to Dandy at all....I have started doing all of Jazzies meds in preparation for going home.
She had her hearing test today, and incredibly, despite all the o2 and meningitis, she passed!!! Astounding!!! I've been concerned about that since she had meningitis!

Once again Jazz was too tired to be bothered working at the booby this morning. Got a nice cuddle though! Paige spent the day with us, she got big cuddles too and loved it!
Jazz had a massive breastfeed after her weigh and bath! She got 6 letdowns!! and ended up with lots of pains in her tummy, took ages to settle and when we left Jeneane was still cuddling her!!
8pm- Slept all afternoon once she settled after her big feed. Took a bottle at 7pm and sucked well.

38 weeks gestation!
In by 9am this morning for Jazzies breastfeed. Changed her bum, cleaned her up and put her on.
She got a big let down and passed out drunk! Was on low flow in 0.08. o2 on high flow between 26-30%
Has a very sore looking bottom, I had been putting sorbolene on it, but it was getting worse so I asked Rosemary if there was something else we could use, she got me some icthamol in zinc. (today, 2 yrs down the track. I can safely say icthamol in zinc is amazing stuff and if a pharmacist was smart they'd make it and sell it over the counter, they'd make a fortune!!! Its the only positive of Jazzies admissions since she came home!!!)
Dr Tan is happy with Jazz and has upped her low flow to 4hrs twice a day . She was a good girl all day and at 2pm we weighed and bathed her. She lost 4g, but thats ok, she's working more now that she's having some breastfeeds.
When i put her in the bath she started carrying on and sucking on her hand, she thought she was starved!!! When I washed her face she tried to suck the face washer! Got her dried and dressed and popped her on the breast, she went nuts!!! Got a big feed, 2 huge let downs and had both sides! Passed out VERY drunk!!
8pm- Lyn said she woke with a very sore bum at 5pm, she plastered her with icthamol. She had a cluster of desats with her feed, Lyn thinks its the reflux.
I asked why she doesnt get the reflux with a breast feed, she reckons its 'cos Jazz controls the breastfeed and is able to take her time too, whereas the EBM, fortifier and thickener are just pushed into her tummy relatively quickly.
Low flow 9pm-1am. o2 on high flow 28%, still on a flow of 4

Jazz was waiting for her feed when i got there, wide awake and looking for her booby!
She latched on and sucked like a champion straight away! Her nurse Jenny, said she'd never seen a prem do so well on the breast!! She says she acts just like any full term newborn!! Well, I guess she's almost a newborn!! 2 more weeks 'til shes 'due'
She fed for 45 minutes and wanted more!!! Had to stop her'cos she got 4 let downs! She certainly didnt want to stop.
Dr Tan thinks shes doing great! He's upping her feeds to 3 hourly and she's back on 6 hrs low flow twice a day. All day she was on 0.06 on low flow, yesterday she was on 0.07
Got to cuddle her most of the day today, it was awesome! When she's on high flow, she's on 26-28% o2.
Aunty Dawn and Jodie came to see her. They both saw her when she was about 2 weeks old and I didnt find out until only recently, that Jodie was a bit traumatised when she saw Jazz. Seeing a baby so tiny and see through can be a very confronting experience and some people really do struggle with it. So they were amazed by how big she had gotten! and they both had a lovely cuddle.
i was overdue to express, again, by 3pm and Jazz got a couple of massive let downs, she passed out drunk very quickly! The nurses thought she was gorgeous!
8pm- Doing wonderfully!!!! Low flow is down to 0.05, tolerating feeds, good temperature.
38+2
Jazz is still absolutely amazing!!!
She was awake from 1am 'til 8am 'cos the poor bugger desperately wanted a suck feed!! The nurses couldnt accomodate her though because they didnt have my permission to give her a bottle!! But they do now. So, azz was thoroughly exhausted after her hard night and too tired for her 9am breastfeed, but did manage a bit of a suck. Dr Tan said she can now have 3-4 suck feeds a day!! So far tolerating them 3 hrly.
And she is doing 6hrs twice a day on low flow, so far, so good.
According to Doreen, when she's on low flow and having 4 suck feeds a day, she might be sent off to Dandenong or Casey, although a lot of the longer term bubs do come home from Monash......I hope she comes home from Monash.
7.40pm- Been great!! o2 is on 28%, sats in the low 90's. Starting her 6 hrs of low flow.
No nurses available for Bay 6 tomorrow so she'll be moved somewhere else for a bit.

Heart sunk this morning, Jazz got moved to Bay 8. Although I know shes only there cos they were short staffed, its still not nice being back in the critical care bays. Only thing is that I get to catch up and say Hi to a few Bay 8 friends a bit more. On a brighter note, Jazz has hit 100 days old which is yet another milestone to celebrate!! She had a 100 days old certificate made up and she recieved a beautiful '100 days quilt' to commemorate the occasion!!
Had a great breastfeed at 11am, fed for 40mins and didnt want to stop!!
Amanda gave her her first bottle feed last night, she chugged it down really well!! What a legend!! (even Dr David tells me she's a legend!! :))
Ken has put her on 8 hrs twice a day of low flow and if she copes she'll be trialled off high flow tomorrow!! Yay! Just incredible how far she's come and how fast she's improving just in the last two weeks, it amazing!!
She saw the opthalmologist, Marcell, today. The doctors still hadnt been able to see the little white spot, but Marcell did. He said its a congenital cataract. He said its anterior and hopefully it shouldnt cause any vision problems but its something she'll need to be followed up on when shes 6 months old. She has mild ROP now, but Marcell thinks it will rectify itself and will most likely be improved by her next eye test in 2 weeks time.
Got weighed today- 1935g! Had her bath, and another breast feed at 5pm. She'll have one or two bottle feeds overnight.
Currently on low flow she's on 0.05, which will be less than she'll be on when she comes home! If she copes with low flow, she'll move to bay 3 or 4, then in about 2 weeks odd they'll have an idea of whether she'll be likely to come home on oxygen. And she'll probably also be moved to Dandenong, but more than likely will come home from Monash if shes coming home on o2.
All she needs now is to get big and take all suck feeds, and come off her meds.
11.20pm- Doing great on low flow, still 0.05. Might just stay off high flow completely!!! About to have her bottle, and if she's awake, another will be offered at 2am

Got in at 8am. Jazz had a good night and had a bottle at 2am. Amanda said she took it well. She was moved back into Bay 5 this morning after her breastfeed, thank goodness were out of NICU again!! Dr Tan has taken her off high flow, she's now on 0.04 on low flow!!
Cathy had her in Bay 5 today and was stunned, its the first time she's seen her since she was in NICU, she kept saying "she's a real little miracle!!!" very loudly in a very asian accent, it was quite funny!! And of course I was very proud!!! Cathy just cant get over how well she's doing. No one really expected her to get off the HFO!!
Cathy even had her o2 down to 0.02 for a couple of hours today! Incredible!!
Co2 results came back - 49!!! Awesome!!
She settled very well back in Bay 5 and even attempted a feed at 11am- but really she just wanted to lick and grin!!
Saturating beautifully on the low flow!
We were interviewed and had lots of pics taken for an article in the leader newspaper, so Jazz will be in there next week sometime!
Still doing great tonight!!!

In for a feed at 8am again. We're back staying with Mum and Dad so they can get the kids to school while I go in and feed Jazz. Jazz just wanted to sleep this morning though.
She had Gary today, he's really lovely and sings and talks all the time to the bubs.
Dr tan is so happy with Jazz that he is taking her off caffiene and said she'll have her first download next week! A download is where they record all her oxygen and heart rate sats via the oximeter all night, then download and interpret that information to understand exactly how much oxygen is required. He said it could even be possible for her to come home without oxygen!! That is something I initially NEVER expected, I was under the impression that home oxygen was basically standard for a micro prem due to the severity of the chronic lung disease they cop!!!
The nurses however, are pretty sure she'll come home with it, they said its very unusual for a 24 weeker to go home with no oxygen....for me, just that Dr Tan thinks its possible is testament to how well he believes she's doing!!! Whether she has it or not, she's amazing and a true miracle!!!!!!
This afternoon around 1pm Jazz was transferred to Bay 3!!! Incredible!!! She's just flying through those bays!!! She'll be out the door in no time at this rate!
She was very tired after her move and her big day on low flow.
Dr Tan thinks she'll be really focussing on feeding within the next 2 weeks, she just needs to get bigger and take suck feeds now!! I reckon she'll be home in July sometime!
8.30pm- She was having frequent desats to the low 80's and was put back up to 0.08, currently on 0.06 and back on caffiene.
Blood gas normal.

Things just keep getting brighter and better!! Jasmine is ultra amazing! She had a great breastfeed this morning, hooked in like there was no tomorrow!
Docs were impressed with her, she has Flora now. Flora hasnt seen her since the HFO! She's keento do a download next week and Jazz is allowed 3 breastfeeds in a row and 1 bottle overnight!
vernight she had the biggest, continuous poo the nurse has ever seen!! lol
Jan, the social worker, came to see me this afternoon, we are having "THE FAMILY MEETING" on Friday!!!! The family meeting is when its close to home time! I cried all the way home I was so happy!
Tonight she was doing very well.
She got a big let down and passed out drunk! Was on low flow in 0.08. o2 on high flow between 26-30%

37 weeks!!
Jasmine is totally and utterly magnificent as usual!!
Kai came in to see Jazzie today, he was so great, he was taking lots of photos and videos of her!! And it turns out hes actually very good at taking photos!
When we got there, she was crying and grumping 'cos she was hungry, and also had a belly full of wind. As soon as I sat her up in the isolette she burped.
She had a weigh- 1776g!!! Then had a bath and really enjoyed it! Got her dried and dressed, had a cuddle....then Kai had a cuddle. He was very, very chuffed to bethe first of the siblings to have a cudlle with her!!!
Shes doing really well on the low flow, and sats around 28-30% on CPAP.
Still tolerating 10ml and 11ml feeds alternating. Tummy girth 30cm.
Leanne did her hand and foot prints again, they are sooo big!!!! Its awesome to see how much shes grown!
10pm- she'd gone back onto CPAP at 8pm, currently on 28% o2. I'll have to buy her some new clothes 'cos soon she'll be in her big girl open cot!!! As soon as she hits 1800g!!!

Jazz amazes me, she's hit the ground running now!!
Arvand came to see me, Etta and some other doctors are taking over her carenow. He said she'll begin upgrading to 2 hrly feeds, and when shes tolerating that she'll start low flow 8 hrs at a time!!!
Had my beautiful cuddle, she had a little play at the breast but mostly wanted to sleep. Held her for 2 and a half hours, wish it couldve gone longer.
This afternoon, the kids and I went out to buy outfits for Jazz, she needs to be nice and warm when she's moved into the open cot which will be very soon!
She had Yvonne looking after her tonight. 8pm update- Doing great, 28% o2 and just had a 15ml feed, she'd be having another 5ml soon and by 1pm she would be on 2 hrly feeds like a big girl!! So far she was tolerating the new feeding regime.

Oh my god this child is amazing!! never ceases to astound me! Mum and I got in at 9.30am, Leah had her and said she's now on high flow and being cycled onto low flow!!! The magic of steroids in action! She's doing so well that she's now offivially a part of the red team- special care!!!
They were going to move her to Bay 6, which is usually quarantine, but is currently Bay 4's spill over, but got really busy with admissions.
Nanny got to put her on the scales and helped give her a bath, Jazz loves the bath now.
Physio came to see her as well and she'll have a physio assessment soon, but looks good so far. Had my usual cuddle, still the highlight of my day!!
Shes still tolerating 2 hrly feeds.
8pm- Jo said shes a star....I know!!!
Having her vaccinations right now. Had panadol before and will continue having it over night. Her o2 went up to 40% but they said it was a mechanical error something to do with the humidity, it has since come down to 35%.
10.30pm She's been moved into her big girl cot!! and shes doing fine! 33-36% o2
37+3
Rang at 8am- Jo had her again and said she's still a star!! Had one big braddy and 1 desat an hour after her vaccinations, but doing great otherwise!
Maintaining her temperature in the open cot so far, o2 28%!!
She didnt go on low flow today, Jo thought she should have a bit of a rest after such a big couple of days. David has her for the rest of the week, he thinks she's doing extremely well! Everyone's very inpressed with her!
Jo thinks she'll probably be home in 6-8 weeks, that'll be late July-early August!! So not long after her due date! After seeing so many micros staying in MUCH longer than their due dates, this is amazing to me!!
She's looking great in her big girl cot. Had to get mum to get some more bankets.
Bec, Ava and Bec's mum came to visit and couldnt believe how much she's grown!! Ava was an absolute champion and got home before her due date!! What a star!!
Ava has grown heaps and she's just gorgeous!
Jo thinks Jazz may have reflux which is really common in prems, but thinks its fairly mild. Jazz will start having an actual breastfeed tomorrow!!!!! Then in the next week or 2 it'll go to 2 a day! She's also going to go up to 3 hrly feeds soon!
8pm- Best behaved! No desats!! 30% o2
37+4
Jazz had her first real breastfeed today!!!
She was crying for her feed, it was the first proper cry I've heard from her, normally its little grizzles, this was a real cry, but sounded like she was crying "meow", haha
She latched onto the left breast with no worries and pigged out!! A little trouble on the right, but we'll get it sorted. She got two let downs and was very 'drunk' and passed out! Slept 'til her next feed so there was no wondering if she'd got enough!
We are able to breastfeed once a day now!
Temperature was a little low after her feed so no weigh today. Had blood gas done-51, what a legend!!
Doing great on high flow, still getting a break from low flow due to immunisations, having the RSV shot tonight or tomorrow, so she'll probably not go back onto low flow for another day yet.
Natalie will be coming to talk to me tomorrow about what will be happening now that shes in special care, and what happens when we go home!! Wow! Getting exciting now!! She'll be home soon!
Cant wait to get home. NBS is a very sad place sometimes. One of Jazzies Bay 5 roomies passed last night, she was 6 months old and had been almost term when she was born, sadly she had an incurable degenerative lung problem. She was so chubby and beautiful and had the most gorgeous eyelashes. I had bumped into her mum in the cafe and told her how beautiful Maria was.....she responded by breaking down and saying Maria wasnt coming home, I cried and said im so sorry.....what do you say??? Its just heartbreaking. Too many beautiful little lives lost. I dont know how the nurses cope, they are amazing people to do what they do.
Jazz was moved to bay 6 this afternoon because Bay 5 is specifically for CPAP babies and they needed Jazzies spot, but she wont go to bay 4 'til shes off high flow.
She was unsettled at first with her new room, but settled fairly quickly and is great! o2 isat 30% and she had a huge poo and wee'd all over her clothes.

8am- Claire said she's been behaving all night, o2 30%, sats 95-96
When I got in, the doctors thought she might be unwell. They were worried once again about her girth, which had gone up to 33.5cm.
She was nil by mouth for 4 hrs, abdominal x-ray showed a lot of gas and a bit of impacted poo. Shehad a suppository and was allowed to have a breast feed.
She went nuts on the breast! I was overdue to express and told them she might get a lot, she got 2 big let downs and drank really well, although at one stage she did forget to breahe!!
Haemoglobin is a bit low, David is considering whether to give her a transfusion. She still hadnt had a poo by the time I left at 3.30pm. She seems to like to just hang on to those suppositories nowadays!!
They are weaning her off high flow now. Her flow reduced from 6 to 5 and then down to 4.
Had her weigh today - 18549g. She had her RSV shot today, began crying 'til she got her beloved sucrose!!
7pm- Fausta has her tonight, she had an 8ml aspirate at 5pm- they think she mustve gotten a ripper of a breast feed!!!
11.40pm- 1 desat, not unusual after an immunisation. Straining and squirming, but no poo yet. Temp is fine, o2 is 30%. Haemoglobin is still low but they havent decided on the top up yet.
Had 2 hrs low flow today with no dramas, and only had 4 desats for the whole day!!! Wow!!!

Came back at 7pm for a second feed ( she's allowed 2 a day now!) She was so tired, and just kept grinning with the booby in her mouth!!!! Starting tomorrow it'll be 9am and 3pm breast feeds!!
Kai came in to see Jazzie today, he was so great, he was taking lots of photos and videos of her!! And it turns out hes actually very good at taking photos!
